When nobody listens

It’s hard, isn’t it? Sometimes nobody will listen to you. Or worse…when you tell them something they completely disregard it and compare it to something they can relate to. “I know what you’re saying,” they say, “I had that problem one time with…”

And it can be hard. You want to shake that person and say: “please just shut up and listen to me”. But you can’t. You feel like that’s hogging the conversation. And so you leave feeling even worse than you did when you first met up with your friend. That’s not really how it’s supposed to be, you think but don’t say as you go your separate directions. You’re supposed to be there for me.

Well, here’s the good news: if you’re feeling like (insert expletive here) then there is hope on the horizon. You can ALWAYS talk to someone, and it may well be a wise idea for you to call a helpline.

I know how it might sound. Like I am inferring you are desperate, and have no friends. That isn’t want I mean at all. Think of this like an extra check-up for your computer or something. You already have the Free Antivirus there and you tried it and it didn’t work as well as you’d hoped (talking to a friend). Going to an expert in the field who can help you is just like taking your computer for a service. It’s that simple, so don’t be ashamed, pick up the phone and remember that you don’t have to suffer on your own.

Catchphrase catastrophe

Advertising executives have a lot to answer for. Not only have they been responsible for some of the most heinous crimes ever committed on TV – I’m thinking about the “Go Compare” opera singer in particular here – but now their insidious reach is even stretching as far as the Houses of Parliament, where one of these advertising catchphrases has even managed to get the PM himself into a spot of bother.
It’s a joke really. No, not when he told a female MP to “Calm down, dear” in the words of Michael Winner from the car insurance ads, but the fact that some talentless but rich graduate, with no discernible social skills, could end up earning a six-figure salary coming up with annoying catchphrases, rather than working as a street cleaner or in apple mac support London like he should be!
I have to agree with the anti-Cameron brigade that it was pretty shocking to use that particular catchphrase at that particular time. He may claim it was a joke; if that’s his idea of humour, then I’d definitely stick to the day job. Even Russell Brand is funnier than that. What I did find funny was Nick Clegg’s reaction on the government front benches. While Cameron’s posh chum Osborne was cackling like a hyena at his boss'wit, Clegg was pulling the kind of uncomfortable facial expression usually reserved for when Uncle Eric comes out with the faintly racist jokes at family occasions. That says more than any tabloid reaction or Conservative statements!

So I was jogging two Mondays ago in the park wearing my new Ascis Gel Nimbus running shoes when I got a call from a friend of mine was lamenting the fact that they applied for a loan and was turned down because their credit rating was poor. So I listened and when it was my turn to speak I gave them the following advice.

Your credit rating can be not what it should be for various reasons including submitting incorrect information, failing to pay credit card debit or utility bills on time due to redundancy or illness, and not having borrowed money before. Yes strangely enough if you do not borrow you will not have any credit rating.

Don’t submit any incorrect information about yourself. Check your credit rating info regularly. You will likely have to pay about £2 to one of the main credit reporting agencies to get a report. You will get a chance to take a look at your credit file which is usually held by Experian or Equifax. Both of these credit reference agencies are the largest in the UK.

Check to see if you are on the electoral register list which is used by the lenders.

Try to pay all your bills in time and make sure that your family does the same. Any negative report about your family members can affect the lending decision when you are applying for a credit.

Don’t send a series of application once your application is turned down. Everything will appear on your file and it will look like you are kind of desperate for money or you are trying to do something illegal.

If you are not related with your family anymore, request your agency to make separate files.

Friendship

I thought it might be a good idea to read up on friendship. It is a sad state of affairs that in the modern world people are so isolated. In the olden days, even the days of my childhood, your friends were the ones that didn’t pull your hair, shared their sweets and toys and were fun to play with. That is the thought in many ways that I have brought forward into my grown up world and some of the qualities that I still look for in those that I would choose to call friend.Aristotle says that is is better to love than to be loved and I think about this. I love and I listen but as I said before, I think at this point in my life there are more people that I know that would rather be loved than actually love others. Are friendships like mobile phone contracts where you look for best roaming prices for your journey ? or are they different? Aristotle says that you need to live with your friend and that friends need to stand the test of time. What I take this to mean is that I really need to give the old ones a better chance to be there for me, because they have survived the test of time. I think of the childhood song ’make new friends but keep the old one is silver and the other gold’. He says though, that it is probably best not to have too many because good friendships take time.

When Job searching Takes Longer than Expected

Even the most qualified individuals will occasionally find themselves in a situation where a job search takes a little longer than we previously anticipated. The period may vary from a few weeks to over a year and this is where you must be prudent in the actions that you take. If you are ever to get to the days beyond fruitless job searches then they are some things that you will have to do and others that you will have to avoid.

The first thing is that you should always have a contingency plan whenever possible. If you can then even your contingency should have its own contingency plan. This is because it is naïve to think that things will always go the way we want. We must always have a backup plan for the worst case scenario that is when absolutely nothing goes according to our plans. This is where you can start pursing train opportunities in your field or a completely different one. This will be good for broadening the field of your job search. If you are qualified in more than one field then the chances are higher that you will find a job in one.

Some of the things you should avoid are to over apply yourself in the job searching task. Accord it time in your schedule but don’t let it take up your whole timetable from dawn to dusk. Doing this may compromise your ability to present your best qualities in an interview. Don’t simply stick to one means of looking for a job and never be unwilling to compromise. The current job markets are mostly filled up and you will find yourself more than once to be in a position where you have to start at a lower position than you would prefer. Maybe you will find yourself with some time in between job searches for the Tria Laser.

I don’t know about you but David Cameron going on and on about the so called Big Society is giving me a headache. In the same way that Tony Blair insisted on saying “Education, education, education”over and over again until our ears collectively bled it’s just a lot of hot air. I’ve heard people debating the benefits of a big society, but really what does it actually mean? Today David Cameron described the Big Society as his “passion”in a speech which he denies was a re-launch of the same old tired idea. As far as I’m concerned it’s just a cover for all the privatisation of our national services which will inevitably happen. The Big Society is meant to be all about the community volunteering in order to make the towns and cities where we live better, more helpful places. But how can people volunteer in a library or a children’s centre for instance when these things have been shut down as a result of the government’s cuts? The whole thing is illogical. Since the credit crunch kicked off in 2008 times have been really hard here in the UK and many people are struggling (financially) more than they ever have in their lives. It’s become much more popular to take out same day loans and frankly I can see why. There are times in the month when I need to pay a bill before it mounts up and at first glance it seems a really simple solution to get a quick loan and pay it off later. Of course it’s not always as easy as that but what’s really shocking is the fact that so many of us need to borrow more than ever before. I wonder if there will come a time when the impact of the cuts is not felt by the poorest and most vulnerable in the society because frankly at the moment I can’t see that happening.

Is there anybody there?

Is there anybody there?

The introduction to my blog has caused some concern among my friends that I’m some sort of manic depressive, who’s about to jump off a tall building. Nothing could be further from the truth!! I’m actually a pretty happy person, who has the same traumas and stresses that we all suffer. All I meant by my intro was that it’s nice to have someone listen to you, really listen, only to help you out and not looking for anything in return.
Sure, I could go and pay £50 for an hour with a counsellor, but I’d feel a bit of a fraud and I certainly don’t need to see a doctor and pop some pills. I did once go and see a doctor when I was having a bit of a black period but he was neither use nor ornament. I think he had one of those locum jobs for doctors and just wanted to get through the day and pick up his pay cheque. I couldn’t help being relieved that I wasn’t really a depressed patient, as they would have left that appointment thoroughly down and out…
So, don’t worry friends, family and loyal readers; this is not going to be a gloomy or sad blog, full of “woe is me” rants or miserable goth poetry. I’m just using my computer to vent – there’s nothing more cathartic than a good vent, believe me – and to talk through what’s going on in my life. You never know, you might get entertained and you might even learn something about yourself. After all, everyone has good days and bad days in their lives and everyone needs someone (or something in my case) to listen to their complaints and grievances. But I promise it won’t all be doom and gloom. I’m quite a cheery person really and have even been known to crack a smile from time to time!
